Instructor Spotlight: Yael Umali

We have two new instructors that we are going to shine the spotlight on this week! Read on to learn a little more about them and their teaching style.

What is your fitness background? 
I’ve been an athlete practically my whole life, playing varsity football throughout my high school and university years. Even after graduating I still craved that endorphin high, but after tearing my ACL a second time, group fitness classes became a part of my routine as a way to release and not burnout from my corporate job. I currently teach indoor rowing, mat-based strength, lengthen, tone resistance classes, HIIT, and cardio climbing classes. 

What interested you in teaching in Elev8? 
Transitioning from my corporate life to full time fitness in early 2019 opened my eyes to all the possibilities being a fitness instructor can offer. I wanted to be someone who had a purpose when teaching, and only until I went back to Elev8 again, I realized that I never really thought of the ‘why’ when I teach my classes. The Spring Resistance Trainer really proved to be a humbling machine – physically and mentally. I want to be able to share that experience with everyone else and why the method is so beneficial.

What is your personal exercise regimen? 
Aside from the classes that I teach, I like to be able to set aside at least 3 days in the week wherein I can exercise for myself. Whether it be a strength and conditioning class, plyometrics, or power yoga. It is very important for me to still challenge my body. I think that’s one of the challenges fitness instructors face – separating work and working out for yourself. 

How would you describe your teaching style? 
I like to keep things organic, light, and positive. I personally think of the studio as my safe space, and I want people to feel that way in my classes. I encourage my students to smile, grunt, cuss or do whatever they need to in order to make the workout more bearable. I also love playing music that I love, and hope that they too would enjoy. 

What excites you most about teaching in Elev8? 
The community! I think being able to connect with the clients in and out of the studio is one of the most rewarding experiences I have had since I started teaching. I believe Elev8 has one of the most diverse group of individuals – both client and employee wise, so I am very excited to be spending days teaching and learning at the same time. 

What is your favorite Elev8 Move? 
Oh Standing Inner Thighs is always a good one. It almost always surprises everyone by how simple it looks! 

What do you like to do in your free time? 
I’m a beach girl at heart, so I take any chance I can to take a couple of days off to drive to the beach and just chill with my closest friends, it’s a luxury I will never tire off. I also cherish days I call ‘vegging’ wherein I stay home with no plan, but to binge shows and hug my labradoggos. 

Tell us a fun fact about you! 
I can fold my tongue like a three-leafed clover 😛
